ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) – Authorities say a couple has been indicted in the death of an 86-year-old Albuquerque woman last May.
The Albuquerque Journal reports that a New Mexico grand jury has charged 55-year-old Craig Smith and 40-year-old Evonne Jaramillo with murder, conspiracy and kidnapping and aggravated burglary in the case.
The couple had previously been arrested in connection with another homicide about a month before Josephina Ortega was killed.
Prosecutors say Smith allegedly broke into Ortega’s home, zip-tied her hands behind her back and put a plastic bag over her head that caused her to suffocate.
Cash was taken from her home and authorities say Smith was recorded on video depositing $600 in cash to an ATM.
Prosecutors say Jaramillo’s DNA was found on a lipstick-stained cigarette stub located outside Ortega’s house.
